I recently saw this photo in Thailand and Laos and decided to research it when I got home. According to an article I read it is really an Oar fish and the photo was actually taken on Sept 19, 1996 at the Navy base in Coranado Calif. The article said that the photo has been touched up to hide damage to the head and body.
A good story though.
